This specific section introduces you to the Historical background of this country, and is thus called History of Singapore

The contemporary historical journey of Singapore officially commenced in the year 1819 - when Englishman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles saw foresaw the tremendous potential of Singapore as a maritime port. Under his vigilant governance Singapore soared and developed steadily till temporary disruption during Japanese occupancy of the island during the Second World War. Singapore finally became politically sovereign after braking away from Malaysia on the 9th of August 1965. This day is celebrated annually by Singaporeans as their National Day. Today modern Singapore is the seventh richest economy (GDP) in the world and is still growing as it is a major shipping and trade hub linking Asia with the rest of the world. The Chinese, Malays and South Asians (Indians and Sri Lankan) still comprise the populace of Singapore; with their forefathers having settled in the island ages ago. Together they have made Singapore what it is today - strong, developed and yet with immense potential for the future.
