Singapore Zoo is a fairly young if the time of its inception is to be taken into consideration. Singapore Zoo was inaugurated in the year 1973, but even within this short span, it has acquired the standards of the internationally acclaimed San Diego Zoo.
Singapore Zoo is modeled on the idea of the "open zoo". The safety and well-being of the animals are maintained by keeping them in commodious enclosures and separating them from the public with the help of fosses. Animals that tend to get wild and cause harm are kept in glass enclosures. Singapore Zoo has not broadened its original land size of 28 hectares, but the 40 hectares of the forest land was developed into the Night Safari. You will simply enjoy the walk through habitats and the animals that are left free to roam about. Even the enclosures are beautifully furnished with tree branches, woods, logs, pools and plants. The Zoo has gagged many mouths in terms of the conservation measures they have taken up. It has encouraged captive breeding of the endangered species. Its Wildlife Conservation Fund has both supported and funded the conservation projects in many countries. It also arranges shows to educate the visitors. Some of the major attractions of the Singapore Zoo are listed below;
Primates - The wide variety and collection of apes, monkeys and lemurs in the Singapore Zoo can contend with any top ranking zoo in the world. It also houses some of the rarest species of monkeys such as the douc langur.
Free Ranging Animals - The animals that are left free in this zoo look as comfortable as if they are in their natural habitat. Birds like the guinea fowl, ibis and storks enjoy free flight and many primate species simply love the unrestricted space they have to themselves. The langurs, spider monkeys and lemurs roam freely.
Breakfast/Tea with Orang Utan - This is a major tourist draw. Enjoy your meal with the Orang Utan, just a few feet away from you, to give you company. The close proximity with the animal need not bother you as the guard is always close by to protect both the visitors and the animal.
Travour is an international travel site and a repository of useful information on Orchard Road, and other major tourist attractions in Singapore and the world at large.
