The Old Parliament House Singapore is the oldest government building that was designed by George Coleman way back in 1827. If you think that it is too much of a matter-of-fact place to be ranked as a tourist attraction in Singapore, think again. Old Parliament House Singapore has been renamed The Arts House.
Old Parliament House Singapore is currently the venue for hosting concerts and exhibitions. Once the seat of the democratically elected Parliament, the mansion is now an art connoisseur's delight. It is a venue to showcase the contemporary visual arts, dance, music, film, and theater by both local and international artists. The Corridors of Time tracks the history of the building and the life of the renowned personalities. A bronze elephant greets you at the entrance to the Old Parliament. It was gifted by King Chulalongkorn of Siam (present day Thailand) as an expression of his appreciation after his stay here on 15th March, 1871. The building was declared a national monument in 1992. It was only in 1999 that the new Parliament was shifted to the new building, not far away.
The Arts House was inaugurated in 2004. The Old Parliament House Singapore was renovated but the old designs and the trappings were carefully conserved. The Chambers was remodeled as the music hall where musical performances are held. The gallery is reserved for the art exhibitions. The pillars and the pelmets are something to be marveled at.
There are arrangements for guided tours, five days a week. The tour is of an average duration of 45 minutes and inclusive of a short film screening and a drink. You will be charge 8$ per head with no admission fee.
