Chinatown Singapore

Chinatown Singapore is a unique homage to the Chinese people, to whom Singapore owes a lot. Chinatown Singapore is a tribute to the never-say-die spirit of the Chinese who refused to give up despite the tragic wars that left in its trail torn families and children who had nowhere to go. A ride through Chinatown is definitely a nostalgic one as it stands witness to Singapore's past. Chinatown is replete with places of tourist interest like the temples, mosques, parks, and shops. Some of them are genuinely old and bear eloquent testimony to the erstwhile days.

Srimariamman Temple Singapore - This temple dates back to the early seventeenth century and is one of the most important Hindu temples. This splendid temple was originally a wooden structure which was reconstructed with bricks. Devi, the mother goddess, and Mariamman, the rain goddess are worshipped in this temple. Bells adorn the doors and the ceiling looks rich and artistic with the fresco paintings. The idols of myriad deities are carved on the walls and the gallery of paintings dedicated to the goddesses will simply hold you spellbound. The fire walking festival, Thimithi, is very celebrated here with pomp and grandeur.

Masjid Al Abrar Singapore - This Tamil Muslim mosque is another witness to the rich history of Chinatown, Singapore. This mosque was originally built way back in 1827. The brick structure was erected much later. The mosque has two minarets and a dome. It is interesting to note that the other name for this mosque is "Kuchu Palli "which is the Tamil version of "small temple".

Maxwell Market Singapore - No place will whet your appetite for good food than this place. Located along the Maxwell Road, this is the place for the real foodie who considers gorging on Chinese, Malay and Mexican food his ultimate pleasure.
