Armenian Church is situated at Hill Street in the Museum Planning Area within the central area (central business district) of Singapore. It is considered as the oldest Christian church of Singapore. This church was built in 1835 under the supervision of the creative mind George Coleman. George Coleman was the colonial architect and it was this creation regarded as the Coleman's masterpiece. His noble creation is dedicated to St Gregory the Illuminator. Besides, Armenian Church in Singapore is selected as a national monument.
Armenian Church is popular for its unique architectural design. It has an octagonal cone supporting a small bell turret with classical Greek style columns. The most surprising and attractive part of this church is its unconventional design. Unlike other churches, Armenian Church does not have any towers or pinnacles.
This piece of art by Coleman stands out among other architectural brilliances. Coleman has designed this church keeping in mind the tropical climate of Singapore. And this is very much evident in its wide verandahs which give essential shade and protect the timber-slatted windows on the ground floor from heavy waterspouts. The windows spread the sunlight and induce cross ventilation. The pews on the other hand are backed with woven rattan, a much lighter and cooler material.
Interesting fact about Armenian Church in Singapore is that you can find residence of parsons on the ground of the church itself and also there is a Memorial Garden to Armenians. However, Memorial Garden is not used as a burial ground. In fact all the tombstones lying there were carried from the Christian cemetery in Bukit Timah.
