Hari Raya Puasa Celebrations

Singapore is the live example of mixed cultures. There are plenty of cultural events to celebrate. Throughout the year some or the other colorful events mark their presence. Amidst such festivities, ethnic parts and temples of Geylang, Little India and China Town add sparkle to the joyful ambience. In fact rural areas, town centers and shopping malls do not remain untouched of this effect. And one of such colorful celebrations which enlighten the entire city is Hari Raya Puasa.

Hari Raya Puasa celebration is held on the first day of the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, Syawal. It indicates the culmination of Ramadan which is the month of fasting compulsory for all healthy Muslims. It is a day of celebration, thanksgiving and feasting. On this auspicious day, Muslims around the world offer a special prayer in the morning. And later they visit their relatives and friends. Those who are young seek forgiveness from elders for their past misbehaviors on this day.

However, Hari Raya Puasa is also known as the Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Eid or Eid ul-Fitr. It is one of the most significant events in Singapore. A mesmerizing ambience is created in the streets of Kampong Gelam and Geylang Serai. Entire area is decorated with bright lights which takes you immediately to the world of festivity. Not only this, you can bask in the colorful festive bazaars and numerous food stalls offering traditional handicraft, Malay fare and inspiring music and performances.
