Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in 1953. The site chosen was a coral ridge at the harbor entrance. The Fort Jesus was built for the safety of the Portuguese living of coast of Kenya. The Fort is now a National Museum.
Mombasa's business district is a unique experience in itself. The shops in this business market sell all kinds of products, from locally made safari boots to imported Nike shoes. Mwembe Tayari is basically a market for fruit and vegetable vendors. Mwembe Tayari, when literally translated, means "ready mangoes".
