Kenya Food

The multicultural heritage of Kenya is perhaps best reflected in the wide range of foods in Kenya.

Hotels in Kenya offer reasonable and elaborate buffets. The menu is usually an assortment of quality beef and seafood dishes, supplemented by an array of tropical fruits and vegetables.

Potatoes and rice eaten with chicken or beef are staples at most meals. A typical festive meal includes large amounts of nyama choma (roasted meat). Bananas, pineapples, and papaya are available year round, and citrus fruits seasonally.

In some of the agricultural areas roasted corn is commonly available along the roadways for sale. Snacks in Kenya are varied and include mandaazi, a sweet deep fried dough cake, and egg-bread, a wheat flour pancake wrapped around fried eggs and minced meat.

Nairobi and Mombasa has the most number of hotels and eateries in Kenya. One famous restaurant in Kenya is the Carnivore in Nairobi. It is a popular tourist location, which features a large barbecue pit with meats available from zebra to warthog. For those wary of the local game, vegetarian meals are also available especially in the Indian restaurants in Kenya.

Among the beverages, coffee is one of the main exports of Kenya and is popular with coffee lovers for its quality. Climate in Kenya is conducive to the growth of coffee and tea. Rural bars also serve the local beer known as muratina.
