The Munich stadium will be hosting the Opening Match of the
2006 FIFA World Cup on 9th June 2006. The stadium's unusual
exterior, shaped from transparent cushions shine in a multiplicity
of colors to permeate the entire structure with a glittering
and graceful aura. This unique feature has made the stadium
at Munich as one of the world's most extraordinary sporting
venues in the world.
The stadium has a capacity of accommodating 66, 000 spectators
and was officially inaugurated on 30 and 31 May 2005. The
first goal of the Bundesliga was scored by England international
Owen Hargreaves to the sheer delight of the capacity crowd
that turned out for the match.
The construction of the new stadium had to go through the
test of a referendum held in October 2002 wherein 65.8 percent
of the population voted for an exclusive football stadium. |

The path breaking concept proposed by Swiss architects Herzog
and de Meuron was approved for implementation in February
2002. OC President Franz Beckenbauer lay the foundation stone
in October 2002 and work on the stadium was completed by April
2005.
The stadium is ideally located to the north of Munich city
in the district of Fröttmaning, with regular traffic
and public transport services on the A9 express motorway.
The astonishing façade with its self-cleaning, fire,
heat and cold-resistant panels are inflated to a permanent
pressure of 350 Pascal. There are provisions for each panel
to be separately illuminated in white, blue or red, generating
a awesome backdrop at night games. Federal Regulations do
not allow the lighting effect to be changed more than every
two minutes. This is so due primarily to minimize the distraction
of the expressway traffic.
The stadium with its three-tier arrangement is unmatched in
the Bundesliga. The hi-tech features of the stadium means
that even the highest tier will provide fantastic views due
largely to a steep 34 degree rake. That is not all. The stadium
also boasts of Europe's largest underground car parking bay
with provisions to park at least 10, 000 cars.
The Munich stadium will be the venue for the spectacular Opening
Ceremony of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The 2006 FIFA World Congress
has also been summoned in Munich. In all the stadium will
be hosting the Opening Match, a semi-final and four other
matches of the 2006 World Cup.
