Ghana defeats USA (2-1)
Ghana stunned the USA by defeating them 2-1 in a highly entertaining Group E encounter in Nuremberg on June 22, 2006. Ghana will now face the World Champions Brazil in their Round of 16 match in Dortmund on 27 June 2006. Stephen Appiah (GHA) was declared Man-of-the-Match for his superb all-round performance.

Italy beats Czech Republic (2-0)
Italy defeated Czech Republic (2-0) and qualified for the Round of 16, where it will play Australia on 26 June 2006 in Kaiserslautern. Marco Materazzi was declared Man-of-the-Match for his good all-round performance.

Italy started its World Cup 2006 campaign in a dream way by defeating debutant Ghana 2-0 in an exciting Group E contest in Hanover on June 12, 2006. Ghana displayed an extraordinary performance and hold Italy goalless till 40th minute when Andrea Pirlo produced a superb goal to give his team 1-0 lead. Ghana also had its share of chances and a second-half equalizer always looked possible until Vincenzo Iaquinta scored the second goal for Italy in 83' and finished them off. Andrea Pirlo was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his spectacular goal and good all-round performance.
Czech Republic crushes USA (3-0)
The Czech Republic started its World Cup campaign in a most desired style by crushing USA 3-0 in a highly entertaining Group E contest in Gelsenkirchen on 12 June 2006. The Czech Republic took an early advantage when its striker Jan Koller struck a goal of just 5-minutes in the game. USA also had its share of chances but couldn't convert them into goals. As USA was getting offensive to produce an equalizer, Czech star striker Tomas Rosicky dashed their hopes by striking the second goal in (36'). In the second-half Czechs maintained their grip on the game and Rosicky struck again in 76th minute to give his team 3-0 lead. USA displayed a good game midfield throughout the match but it was a no match for tactics and skills of Czechs. Tomas Rosicky was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his 2 goals and excellent all-round performance. |
