The magnificent Westfalenstadion of Dortmund is regarded
as the German Bundesliga's opera house and was built specifically
for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Westfalenstadion is Borussia
Dortmund's home turf and they play their home games here.
Earlier there were four separate stands and with a view to
increase the seating capacity, the authorities in the year
2001decided to join the four stands. Post construction the
capacity of the stadium is 67, 000. The stadium has been so
designed that it allows adequate aeration of the playing surface.
In 2005 the stadium witnessed another round of reconstruction
and the authorities decided to allocate seats in the lower
tier with sophisticated back rests. As part of the modernization
drive an exclusive VIP stand was also unveiled. A state-of-the-art
electronic access control system was put in place along with
a fully refurbished dressing room. The Westfalenstadion is
conspicuous by its eight massive yellow support pylons symbolizes
the coming of age of the stadium and has already become a
kind of landmark in the Dortmund skyline. Many renowned international
football players are of the opinion that Dortmund's Westfalenstadion
is the best football stadium in the world after Aztec stadium
in Mexico, which is no mean feat.
