Philadelphia United States still plays a second fiddle in terms of the ports to the Eastern Sea board cities like Baltimore and New York. The city itself is in the middle of major rebirth. The powers in the state machinery are also trying to create a cruise port terminal out of the historic city.
Philadelphia has been a port city more than 300 years. For most part of its early history Philadelphia port thrived and expanded without major guidance. It was up to the desperate private concerns to do the maintenance work. It was during these initial years that all manner of break bulk cargoes moved over the city's docks, establishing early on Philadelphia's reputation for the fast, expert handling of any cargo imaginable. It was at this point that the Philadelphia port was looked at by the government. It played a more active role than the private concerns for the upkeep of the port.
Philadelphia, Untied States was looked after by the Department of Commerce, Philadelphia. However the department found it too expensive to maintain the port. And it was at this time that a new port agency with a new form of port governance was eventually created. The Philadelphia Port Corporation had issued bonds for the generation of more funds. Major renovations were carried out in the 1960s and the 1970s by the Philadelphia Port Corporation.
Like many ports of the United States, the Port of Philadelphia found it difficult to manage and upkeep the port due to shortage of funds. The Philadelphia Port Corporation staff with the permission of the city of Philadelphia approached the commonwealth of Pennsylvania for major financial support. The first step was the creation of Philadelphia Regional Port Authority an independent state agency in 1990. For most part Philadelphia, United States major success has been in enticing cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Lines and Celebrity Cruises to assign cruises trips in spring, summer and fall season homeports for ships heading to Bermuda. The port of call also attracts a variety of cruise lines such as Silversea, Seabourn and Radisson Seven Seas as well as European based ships like Hapag Lloyd's Europa, Swan Hellenic's Minerva II, Peter Deilmann's Deutschland.
