Windjammer Barefoot Cruises is a family run company and was founded in 1947. The company is based in Miami. It all started by Captain Mike Burke when he took a dilapidated 70-foot ketch and began offering ultra-informal trips to the Bahamas.
Windjammer Barefoot Cruises offer cruise packages to the ABC Islands, Treasure Isles and Costa Rica, British Virgin Islands, St Lucia and Grenadines, Eastern Caribbean, French West Indies and to the islands of the West Indies namely Antigua, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent among others. Most cruises are summer cruises. The cruise to St Lucia and Grenadines is all year long. ABC Island cruises are during the fall months. All cruises are of seven days duration.
Windjammer Barefoot Cruises owns a fleet of four ships; S.V. Legacy, S.V. Mandalay, S.V. Polynesia and S.V. Yankee Clipper . S.V. Legacy was a meteorological research vessel until acquired and renovated by Windjammer. The ship has spacious interiors and state of the art navigational systems. S.V. Mandalay is a spacious ship built in 1923 and has 72 berths. It is serviced by a crew of 30 people. S.V. Polynesia was built in 1938 and was a Portuguese Grand Banks fleet. It has 112 cabins. S.V. Yankee Clipper was built in 1927. It was considered to be one of the fastest tall ships on the West Coast and was acquired in 1965 by Windjammer. All cabins are comfortable and spacious but are by no means luxurious. There are sun decks on board every ship which has mats for sun bathing.
Windjammer Barefoot Cruises provide a great onboard atmosphere. The day begins with the captain who provides information on the port of the day. During the evenings entertainment seems to be revolved around the quaint, which means betting on horseshoe crab races and costume parties. There are whacky theme parties too which are organized. Ships occasionally spend evenings in ports with interesting nightlife and provide tender service until the wee hours.
