Christmas in Russia was initially religious but now it a festival of entertainment. In Russia St. Nicholas is a famous figure. The Legend associated with St. Nicholas is 11th-century Prince Vladimir went to get baptized at Constantinople and returned with numerous tales of the miracles performed by St. Nicholas of Myra.
A majority of Christian Russians belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church and still use the old Julian calendar. So, their Christmas celebration is 13 days before our Christmas. Christmas dinner in Russia is meatless. One of the must served dish at Christmas dinner in Russia is special porridge made of wheat berries or other grains called kutya. Some people throw kutya upto the ceiling believing that they would get a good harvest.
Traditional Christmas includes special prayers and 39 days fast till 6 January, when first star appears in the sky. To terminate the fast a twelve-course supper in honor of each of the twelve apostles is served.
In Russia the gift giver is Babushka. She is a legendry grandmother and is believed that she refused to accompany Wise Men to see Jesus Christ. Later when she felt guilty, she took her basket full of presents and set on her journey. She never found Jesus Christ and now she leaves a present at the door of every house in Russia.
